Man sets himself on fire in his own apartment

7 June, Minsk /BELTA correspondent/. A man set himself on fire in his own apartment in Vitebsk, the Belarusian Ministry of Emergency Situations informed a BELTA correspondent. On the evening of 6 June, rescuers in Vitebsk responded to a call about a fire in an apartment of a five-storey residential building. Two young women were rescued from the burning apartment by Ministry of Emergency Situations workers. They were unharmed and told the firefighters that the fire had been started by the apartment owner, who had doused himself and the room with gasoline and then set it alight. His body was found on a bed in one of the rooms. As reported to BELTA by Marina Fando, spokesperson for the Vitebsk Regional Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Vitebsk resident committed the act of self-immolation due to an argument with his cohabitant. During a heated argument, the woman stated that she would call the police, and the man, in response, promised to set himself on fire in that case. Law enforcement officers who arrived had to speak with the troublemaker through a closed door, and then, in a fit of rage, the man carried out his threats: he doused himself with gasoline from a canister and set himself alight. A neighbour had already informed the rescuers about the fire. During the incident, two female students who rented a room there were in another room and, for obvious reasons, were afraid to leave.
