An increase in acute respiratory infections in Belarus is expected in January-February, in line with forecasts. Currently, the Vitebsk region maintains a seasonal level of incidence of acute respiratory infections (hereinafter referred to as ARIs) and influenza.
According to surveillance data for ARIs and influenza, an increase in the activity of influenza A (H3N2) viruses is noted, alongside the circulation of non-influenza ARI pathogens (adenoviruses, rhinoviruses, RSV viruses, seasonal coronaviruses, SARS-CoV-2 virus). In the Lepel district, for the current calendar week, an increase in ARI incidence has been observed, by 9.2% compared to the same period in 2025, among both the adult population and children. Children account for 71% of those infected.
Respiratory viruses are primarily transmitted via airborne droplets and pose a high risk of spread. Therefore, during periods of increased ARI incidence, personal and public preventive measures should be observed. It is recommended to reduce time spent in crowded places and on public transport, and to avoid close contact with people showing signs of illness, such as sneezing or coughing. Maintaining hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette is very important: wash hands thoroughly and regularly with soap, especially after being outdoors and using public transport; use disposable tissues for runny noses, which should be discarded in waste containers after use.
Regular wet cleaning and ventilation of premises where people are present reduce the risk of virus transmission.
If symptoms of ARI appear, it is advisable to stay at home, as an infected person can not only become a source of infection for others but also develop complications of their illness. Ample fluid intake and antipyretic medications will alleviate symptoms, while other medications, if necessary, will be prescribed by a doctor.
Special attention should be paid to nutrition during the ARI season. The diet should include more vegetables and fruits with high vitamin C content. Adhering to a work-rest regime also contributes to strengthening immunity.
