On May 2nd at 20:18, rescuers received a report of an apartment fire in the agro-town of Sloboda, Lepel district.

Rescuers arriving at the scene discovered heavy smoke emanating from the window of an apartment located on the second floor of a two-story residential building.

The apartment was occupied, with the permission of the owner, by his brother, born in 1958. According to neighbours, the man had a tendency to abuse alcohol. During the search, employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations found the man in a non-burning room and carried him out into the fresh air. Shortly thereafter, medical personnel pronounced the pensioner deceased.

As a result of the fire, property in the room was damaged, and the walls and ceiling were smoke-stained.

An investigation is underway regarding the fire, and the cause is being established. The version being considered is careless handling of fire while smoking by the deceased.

Dear citizens! Please observe fire safety rules in your homes, refrain from smoking in residential areas, and ensure that matches and cigarettes are extinguished after use. Install autonomous fire alarms in your living rooms, which will promptly alert you to danger in the event of a fire. And remember: one unextinguished cigarette can cost a life, and not just one!
