The "Green Cities" project will coordinate activities to support green urban development in Belarus at the international seminar "Development of Promising Directions for Green Urban Development in the Republic of Belarus," which opens today in Minsk.

Topics of green urban development, sustainable urban development, and the implementation of green economic principles are priorities in Belarus, which is reflected in most national plans and strategies, particularly in the National Strategy for Sustainable Development of the Republic of Belarus until 2030. New realities require innovative approaches to solving issues related to progressing urbanisation, linking environmental protection, social development, and green economy issues.

At the seminar on December 5-6, interim results of the project "Belarus: Support for Green Urban Development in Small and Medium-Sized Cities of Belarus" (abbreviated as "Green Cities") will be presented, and further activities to promote green urban development in the Republic of Belarus will be coordinated. Participants will discuss national policy in the field of sustainable transport and mobility, and the implementation of energy-efficient solutions. The focus will be on the implementation by Belarusian cities of the "Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy" initiative, as well as measures to reduce CO2 emissions in the implementation of green urban development plans.

Representatives of administrations of Belarusian cities, which are actively embarking on the path of sustainable development, will share their experience in developing strategies and implementing measures in this area. International experience in planning smart sustainable cities will also be widely presented, demonstrating the effectiveness of projects aimed at achieving green development goals using examples of specific European cities. Based on the results of the seminar, it is planned to develop proposals for the directions of green urban development in Belarus.
