The National Library of Belarus will hold over 150 book exhibitions, presentations, multi-projects, and meetings with writers during the Year of Books. This was announced today at a press conference by Elena Dolgopolova, First Deputy Director of the National Library for User Services and Ideology, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.
The press conference was also attended by Vadim Shcherbich, Head of the Department of Cultural Institutions and Folk Art of the Ministry of Culture, Elena Kubyshkina, Director of the Capital Centralized System of State Public Libraries, and Petr Lapo, Director of the Fundamental Library of Belarusian State University, who spoke about the work being done to popularize books and reading in the library environment.
According to Elena Dolgopolova, one of the key events of the National Library should be the multi-project "Library," which will showcase a wide range of ideas for promoting the book as a cultural phenomenon. This includes not only verbal but also visual means, which play a significant role in fostering an interest in reading.
As the Deputy Director noted, this year library specialists will continue their research into the literary preferences of the reading audience, as well as monitor the composition of the libraries' information resources, because to attract a reader, one must know their interests.
The participants of the press conference drew attention to the fact that regional libraries are doing a considerable amount of work to popularize books. Even if these events are not as large-scale, they have their own audience and importance in the overall process of increasing interest in books.
Much was said about the growing popularity of e-books among teenagers and young people, therefore, the development of electronic content should be one of the priority tasks for institutions of the library system today. Of course, it will not be possible to make every book accessible, but libraries are ready to consider modern trends and apply them in their work.
Responding to journalists' questions, Elena Dolgopolova noted that the globally widespread movement of bookcrossing actively contributes to engaging Belarusians in reading. "A distinctive feature of this movement in Belarus is the fact that in our country, its promotion is carried out not by cafes, shops, or clubs, as in most European countries, but by libraries, although we should primarily be interested in readers coming to us," said the Deputy Director of the National Library. -0-
