Vladimir Prokoptsov noted that within the new museum complex, which the National Art Museum of Belarus will become after a major reconstruction, it is planned to establish a National Restoration Centre. It will be properly equipped to carry out professional restoration of artworks from various museums across the country.
"Once a well-equipped centre exists, it will be possible to carry out restoration of museum artworks on demand. In this way, we will provide professional assistance. Owners of icons will also be able to apply here individually and receive high-quality work for a certain fee," noted Vladimir Prokoptsov.
Furthermore, it is very important to improve the qualifications of those working in this field. The Collegium of the Ministry of Culture plans to consider the issue of training restorers. This is a matter requiring a serious approach. "An analysis is currently underway to determine how many restorers with what kind of education are working in the country's museums. I believe these should be professionals, graduates of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, who must undergo certification every five years. A relevant commission should assign them a category," said Vladimir Prokoptsov.
He added that religious institutions should also have professional restorers. "I would like professional restorers to work in churches, because unique icons belong not only to the parish. They belong to the culture of Belarus as a whole," emphasised the Director General of the National Art Museum of Belarus.
