The Native Nature Week is taking place in Belarus from May 22 to 29, the press service of the National Academy of Sciences informed BELTA.
The event is dedicated to the Year of Small Motherland and timed to coincide with the celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22). The Scientific and Practical Centre of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for Bioresources, the V.F. Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Central Botanical Garden, and the Institute of Forest have prepared a series of events.
A seminar-opening dedicated to the International Day for Biological Diversity, with the participation of the leadership of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Department of Biological Sciences, and scientific organizations, will be held on May 22 at 11:00 AM. Botanical and Zoological Thursday is scheduled for May 23. On the same day, the IX International Scientific-Practical and Educational Seminar for students, undergraduates, postgraduates, teachers, and employees in the specialty "Forestry" ("Forestry Business") will start.
On May 24, excursions "Natural Flora in the Exhibitions and Collections of the Central Botanical Garden" and "Decorative Plants of the Natural Flora of Belarus" will be held at the Central Botanical Garden. On Saturday and Sunday, May 25-26, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the TOYDAY family game festival will take place at the Central Botanical Garden. It is planned that visitors will not only be able to see rare and endangered plant species but also purchase their specimens at the garden's shop.
On May 28, a tree-planting campaign in school grounds with schoolchildren will be held in Minsk and Gomel.
Throughout the Native Nature Week, leading scientists from the organizations of the Department of Biological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will address the public, participate in media events, and attend presentations and celebrations.
The International Day for Biological Diversity was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1995. The purpose of the holiday is to raise public awareness on issues of ecological system preservation and to draw public attention to the problem of the irreversible disappearance of many representatives of flora and fauna on Earth.
