In the Vitebsk district, on the outskirts of the cemetery in the village of Shevino, there is an unusual open-air museum. Here you can find a kurgan surrounded by boulders and stone tombstones. The region intends to preserve the memory of ancient burial rites.
The old crosses found at the graveyard have been arranged in chronological order on a small site. The kurgan and wooden grave posts had to be recreated. All the stones are authentic, each unique in its own way: one has text inscribed on it, another depicts runes. Even if a tombstone has no inscription, its shape itself tells specialists a lot. For example, if the upper part of the stone is sloped, it means the cross stood on a woman's grave, while if a man was buried, the stone was installed straight.
