Sporting competitions between major states and global players can change the political situation in the world for the better. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko expressed confidence in this on September 9 at the opening ceremony of the Europe - USA athletics match, according to a BELTA correspondent.
The Head of State emphasized that hosting these large-scale competitions is a great honour for Belarus and an opportunity to recall the past of the "Dynamo" stadium – a stadium where sports legends of the past century performed – Soviet and American athletes.
"Back then, the USSR - USA match became an example of fair and uncompromising struggle. And most importantly, it became a symbol of the aspiration for political balance and peaceful rivalry between the great powers of that era. I am convinced that today, similar sporting competitions are capable of changing the political situation for the better," said Alexander Lukashenko.
The President noted that Minsk is happy to welcome its overseas friends – the sports team of the United States of America, who had to travel a long way and quickly adapt to new conditions. "I am sure that Belarusian hospitality and the warm welcome from the spectators will help you demonstrate your maximum potential in the arena," the Head of State addressed the American athletes.
According to Alexander Lukashenko, Belarusian spectators will undoubtedly support all athletes – this is in the character of a tolerant people open to the world. "We know for sure: no matter who wins, we – millions of fans from all over the world – will witness the birth of new athletics legends," the President added.
