"Our craftswomen intend to adorn the belt with new ornaments, patterns, and to test new weaving techniques discovered during ethnographic expeditions in their districts. This will not just be work on the belt, but also masterclasses for those wishing to learn this ancient craft traditional for the Mogilev region," noted Natalia Dominikova.
Last year, during a regional weaving seminar, craftswomen laid the foundation for the future rarity. Currently, the belt is 35 m long, and the fabric width is 15 cm. By the "Kupalye" festival ("Alexandria Gathers Friends"), traditionally held in the agro-town of Alexandria, Shklovsky district, in early July, the belt's length should exceed 50 m. To ensure success, craftswomen from different parts of the region will come to Mogilev every month to continue working on the belt. For example, today weavers from Dribin district will be working on the Kupalye masterpiece.
A presentation exhibition of this unique item will be held, as last year, at the "Kupalye" festival. It is expected that guests of the event will not only be able to admire the belt but also, if they wish, contribute to its weaving and, with the help of the craftswomen, master the secrets of this ancient craft.
