The Head of State is visiting the Vitebsk Regional Maternity Hospital today, where patients with coronavirus from all over the region also give birth. A separate unit has been allocated for them.

The Chief Physician of the maternity hospital, Elena Leonovich, reported to the President that the hospital has over 150 beds.

– As of today, there are enough beds, – she noted.

According to the Minister of Health, Dmitry Pinevich, coronavirus has been detected in 600 pregnant women in the country, 100 of whom have been diagnosed with pneumonia, and 25 are on oxygen support.

Speaking about the infection of newborns, Elena Leonovich told Alexander Lukashenko that babies can contract COVID-19 if they are with their infected mother from the first days:

– Therefore, it was decided, regardless of what the WHO recommended and said about the possibility of co-bedding mothers and newborns, we take the children away immediately. We conduct explanatory work with the mothers.

– And approximately how many days is a newborn child without its mother? – the President inquired.

– Until the mother recovers. Only then do we hand over the newborn. Our mothers understand everything, they treat this normally, they understand the high degree of contagiousness of this disease. Currently, there are 45 mothers with COVID infection in the maternity hospital, 25 of them have already given birth. 25 newborns have been tested on the third day, their PCR tests are negative.
