In 2018, the number of road traffic accidents involving children increased in the republic. In January-February 2019, 2 children died on the country's roads, and 44 sustained injuries of varying severity.
In order to respond promptly to the developing situation in ensuring road traffic safety, and to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in eliminating the causes and conditions of road traffic injuries involving minors, a nationwide preventive campaign to prevent child road traffic injuries, "Protect the Children!", will be held from March 6 to March 15, 2019.
During the campaign, extensive awareness-raising activities will be conducted among minors in all educational institutions. Information on the rules for safe participation in road traffic and crossing the carriageway, safety measures at pedestrian crossings, and the rules for using retroreflective elements will be disseminated. Preventive measures will be carried out in the work collectives of organisations, during which drivers of private transport will be informed about the Road Traffic Regulations concerning the safe transportation of children, as well as organised transportation of children's groups by bus. When visiting educational institutions, particular attention will be paid to deficiencies in the maintenance of traffic control devices and the street and road network. If deficiencies are identified, orders will be issued.
