According to the Traffic Regulations, the winter tyre season begins on December 1st. However, experienced drivers know that it is better not to delay changing tyres and to switch from summer tyres with the first frosts.
The State Automobile Inspectorate asks drivers to consider that in the current weather conditions, a seemingly clear road surface may be slippery, therefore:
- choose a restrained driving style and a safe speed, taking into account the road surface condition and visibility, maintain a safe distance and side clearance
- avoid unnecessary lane changes, overtakes and passing manoeuvres
- be vigilant when approaching pedestrian crossings
- fasten the seatbelts of all occupants, ensure the safe transportation of children using restraint systems
Also, to avoid queues at tyre fitting centres, we recommend taking care of seasonal tyre changes in advance, as at low temperatures, summer tyres harden and cease to perform their functions of ensuring good grip with the road surface, making the use of such tyres unsafe.
Pedestrians need to understand that on a slippery road, the braking and stopping distance of any vehicle increases significantly, and during emergency braking, a car can go into an uncontrolled skid. In this regard, pedestrians should not risk their own safety; they must cross the road at designated places and only after ensuring that all vehicles have stopped. It is necessary to ensure your visibility by using retroreflective elements.
