Winter is a period of increased injuries.

The main causes of injuries include weather conditions – ice and icicles, as well as winter recreation. Indeed, sledding, snowmobiling, and snowboarding often lead to bruises and fractures.

Common reasons for visits to trauma centres in winter include inattention, inappropriate footwear, and streets not cleared of snow and ice.

People often fail to notice ice under snow in their haste.

The "leaders" among injuries are bruises, dislocations, and fractures, as well as frostbite.

When going outside in winter, both children and adults must observe precautions. Always remember that you should not walk under the roofs of houses. Inadequate clearing of building roofs poses a real danger from hanging icicles. Falling from a height, these icy formations can damage the head and other body parts.

If the outdoor temperature suggests the presence of ice, you should choose appropriate footwear before going outside. Footwear should be seasonal with non-slip soles.

Remember that the most dangerous places are icy steps and porches. Hold onto handrails, keep your hands free of heavy items, and carefully navigate these areas.

Try to avoid any slopes and hills.

Dress according to the weather, and avoid hypothermia and frostbite.

You should also cross the roadway with caution. Ice and slippery conditions are dangerous for both pedestrians and drivers. It is much harder to brake on a slippery road than on dry asphalt, which means running across the road in front of an approaching car becomes fatally dangerous. Do not cross the road in undesignated areas. When crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing without a traffic light, ensure that vehicles are at a safe distance and have started to brake to let you pass.

Observing these simple rules will help prevent injuries during the winter period.
