At the initiative of the American side, a telephone conversation took place today between the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, and the US Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo. The conversation lasted about half an hour. BELTA was informed of its details by the press service of the Belarusian leader.

The interlocutors discussed the global situation. In their mutual opinion, since Michael Pompeo's visit to Minsk in February, the situation has changed dramatically, and new challenges have arisen and continue to emerge.

Alexander Lukashenko and Michael Pompeo also discussed the domestic political situation, both in Belarus and in the United States of America.

The Secretary of State emphasised that he remains consistently committed to the sovereignty and independence of our country and supports the development of cooperation with Belarus.

Alexander Lukashenko informed his interlocutor about the national dialogue that is currently actively underway in Belarus.

Touching upon the foreign policy agenda, the Head of State stressed that Russia is the main ally, noting in particular the support provided during the current period. At the same time, as was observed, Russia does not interfere in the internal affairs of Belarus. However, the countries are ready to jointly respond to emerging external threats. In particular, in accordance with the treaty within the framework of the CSTO - on the protection of common space - in the event of external aggression from Poland, Lithuania or other countries, Belarus and Russia will be forced to respond.

At the same time, Michael Pompeo noted that there is no need to fear such a threat from NATO, Poland or Lithuania, as it does not exist.

"In general, the Belarusian leader stressed that we advocate for the peaceful and calm resolution of all conflicts, including on the external contour," the press service reported.

Another topic of conversation was the fate of a citizen of the USA and the Republic of Belarus.

In addition, as Alexander Lukashenko noted, Belarus is closely monitoring the ongoing political campaign in the USA. He wished success in its conduct in general and personally to Donald Trump.
