Agricultural enterprises of the Vitebsk region have harvested buckwheat from 64% of the sown areas. The crop has been gathered from 1.6 thousand hectares, with a total of over 2.4 thousand hectares to be harvested. Last year, only 688 hectares of buckwheat were sown in the region. "Buckwheat is an unpretentious crop, but it loves warmth, which makes it capricious for our region, considering its climatic features. The weather for buckwheat growth last summer was favourable, allowing for improved yield indicators. If last year the average yield was 6.2 centners per hectare, now it is 13.3 centners per hectare – more than double," explained the regional agricultural production department, adding that plans are in place to increase the sown areas for the crop.
New harvest vegetables in the northern region are being gathered slightly faster than in 2021. 2058 tonnes have been harvested from 74 hectares, which is 27% of the plan. The average yield is 278 centners per hectare. "Carrots harvested amount to 1035 tonnes from 31 hectares, with a total of 110 hectares to be harvested. The yield for carrots is 332 centners per hectare," the committee noted. "Beetroot harvested is 830 tonnes from 31 hectares, with a plan to harvest 48 hectares; its yield is 268 centners per hectare. Cabbage is usually harvested later by agricultural enterprises to maximise storage duration. Currently, cabbage has been harvested from 3 hectares out of 89 hectares."
Corn for silage has been harvested from 24.5 thousand hectares, which is slightly over a quarter of the plan. The yield has reached 240 centners per hectare, which is higher than last year's figures, when 222 centners per hectare were recorded by the same date.
