What to do if you find a wounded, sick, or dead wild ungulate? Citizens frequently contact the State Inspectorate with this question. However, the answer is clearly set out in the Rules for Hunting Management and Hunting.

Clause 105 of the Rules stipulates that upon discovering wounded, injured, sick, or dead wild animals within hunting grounds and/or on territories not included in the hunting ground fund, including on roads, it is prohibited to self-procure them, butcher or move (transport) their carcasses or parts thereof, or use the products (meat, hide, horns, etc.).

In case of discovering a wounded, injured, sick, or dead game animal of regulated species (including wild ungulates) or a wild animal of species listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus, the person who discovered such an animal must inform the hunting ground user, or the duty service of the territorial internal affairs body, or the duty service of the district emergency department, who are obliged to forward this report to an authorized official of the hunting ground user or the local executive and administrative body.

Local executive and administrative bodies and hunting ground users are obliged to provide the territorial internal affairs bodies and district emergency departments with the contact telephone numbers of officials authorized to make decisions on organizing the rescue or procurement of wounded, injured, sick game animals.

Upon the discovery of a wounded, injured, sick, or dead game animal of regulated species, an authorized official of the hunting ground user, and within the reserve hunting ground fund or on territories not included in the hunting ground fund – an authorized official of the local executive and administrative body, with the participation of representatives of the organization of the Ministry of Forestry and the territorial body of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection

on Wednesdays, as well as a specialist from the state veterinary service (if the animal is sick or deceased), shall draw up an act, after which, if necessary, the injured, traumatized or sick wild animal shall be taken down in their presence. The movement (transportation) and butchering of wild animals without an act drawn up in the cases specified above are prohibited.

We draw special attention to the fact that the illegal (including unauthorized) movement (transportation) or butchering of wild ungulate animals, including deceased ones, or their parts, are criminal offenses, the responsibility for which is established by parts 2 and 3 of Article 282-1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus.
