On February 16, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The official emblem for the celebration of the 1150th anniversary of Polotsk has been approved and will soon appear on advertising and souvenir products, as reported to BELTA by the Polotsk City Executive Committee.
The emblem features the city's coat of arms placed on a birch bark scroll. It indicates the city's founding date – 862, and the jubilee number 1150.
According to specialists from the culture department of the Polotsk City Executive Committee, the republican organizing committee has generally approved the program of celebrations, which will start on the evening of May 25 and last until June 5 – the Day of Remembrance of Euphrosyne of Polotsk. The organizers of the celebration promise to make it bright and memorable. The preamble to the festivities will be an international scientific and practical conference, organized by the National Academy of Sciences and Polotsk State University, and a concert "Masterpieces of Opera Art at the Walls of Ancient Sophia" with the participation of artists from the National Academic Grand Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus, which will take place on May 25.
The official start of the festivities will be on May 26. On this day, six thematic venues will operate in Polotsk, where everyone will find activities and entertainment to their liking: from children's games and sports activities to trade stalls stylized in different historical eras. On the same day, a gala concert of masters of arts will be held.
Throughout the following week, concerts by amateur and professional artistic groups, folklore groups, and folk craft fairs will take place in the city. At the same time, the medieval culture festival "Rubon" will be held.
From June 2, a series of events with a Orthodox theme will be held in the jubilee city: a bell ringing festival and an Orthodox fair. On the Day of Remembrance of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk, June 5 (the last day of the celebrations), a Procession of the Cross and a joint service by church hierarchs will take place.
Delegations from twin cities and the most ancient cities of Ancient Rus – Veliky Novgorod, Rostov the Great, and Smolensk – will arrive for the Polotsk jubilee. In addition to officials, their delegations will include creative groups, folk masters, and artisans who will demonstrate their skills at the traditional craft fair.
As reported, UNESCO has included the 1150th anniversary of Polotsk in the calendar of memorable dates for 2012-2013. An exhibition will be held at the headquarters of this international organization in Paris in October 2012. Preparations for the exhibition, which will include photographs telling about the past and present of Polotsk, have now begun.
Polotsk boasts a rich and glorious history. One of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, it is first mentioned in the "Tale of Bygone Years" under the date 862. Its advantageous geographical location "on the route from the Varangians to the Greeks" contributed to Polotsk becoming one of the significant trading and cultural centres of medieval Europe. The city gave the world Euphrosyne of Polotsk, Francysk Skaryna, and Symeon of Polotsk. General Roman Kondratenko, the hero of the defence of Port Arthur, and Yuri Tarich, the founder of Belarusian cinema, hail from here. Polotsk is home to about 150 historical sites, including the unique monuments of ancient architecture, the Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Transfiguration Church.-0-
