16 January, Vitebsk /Alena Tikhonova - BELTA/. Around 50 ice rinks and skating areas are being prepared to welcome winter recreation enthusiasts in Vitebsk, the education, sports and tourism department of the city executive committee informed a BELTA correspondent.

In the regional centre, the ice rink on Victory Square has already been flooded. On 19 January, sports events and competitions will be held here as part of the International Snow Day celebration.

Work is actively underway to prepare the ice rink on the site near the Summer Amphitheatre. If sub-zero temperatures persist in the region, the ice rink will be able to welcome active recreation enthusiasts on the weekend. In the coming days, ice boxes will be flooded on school grounds and in courtyards.

As for cross-country skiing, it is not yet possible due to insufficient snow. About a dozen trails (the main ones being located near the Olympic Reserve College, the Vitebsk River floodplain recreation area, Lokomotiv Stadium, the Palace of Sport on Builders Avenue, and the Park of Culture and Recreation named after the Soviet Army) will become operational as soon as the snow cover depth reaches at least 10-15 cm.

Similar snow conditions are also required for the tubing hills, located near the Vitebsk Central Sports Complex, to become operational. -0-
