Glubokoye District: 50-year-old pedestrian dies in road traffic accident
The accident occurred on November 12 around 8 PM in the urban settlement of Podsvilye, Glubokoye District.
A 46-year-old resident of Glubokoye District, driving an Opel Vectra car along Sovetskaya Street, hit a 50-year-old local resident who was walking along the edge of the roadway in the same direction.
As a result of the collision, the pedestrian sustained bodily injuries from which she died at the scene. The woman was not marked with a retroreflector.
An investigation into the road traffic accident is underway.
Orsha: Driver who hit a teenager at a pedestrian crossing identified.
The accident occurred on November 10 around 8 PM near house 30 on Karl Marx Street in Orsha. The driver, operating a passenger car, hit a teenager crossing the roadway at an unregulated pedestrian crossing. As a result of the road traffic accident, the 16-year-old youth sustained bodily injuries and was taken to Vitebsk Regional Clinical Hospital. The driver fled the scene of the accident. Law enforcement officers, having studied the video surveillance recordings along the possible route of the vehicle, identified the make of the car. The driver was a resident of Orsha, born in 1967.
The State Automobile Inspectorate reminds that leaving the scene of a road traffic accident of which a driver is a participant is subject to administrative liability in the form of a fine ranging from five to twenty-five base units or deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a period of up to two years.

“You Cannot Hide from Your Conscience!” The problem of drivers leaving the scene of a road traffic accident remains relevant to this day.
Last year alone, 30 such accidents occurred in the Vitebsk region. They claimed the lives of 6 people. Most of the drivers who fled were found. In the current year 2016, drivers left the scene of 7 accidents. One of these accidents ended tragically.
For instance, on the evening of January 7, in the village of Semenchiki, Gluboksky district, the body of a pensioner was discovered with signs of being hit by a vehicle. Measures were immediately taken to search for the driver. Thanks to the professional and competent actions of the Internal Affairs Directorate officers, the fugitive was found. He turned out to be a 41-year-old resident of Novopolotsk.
As practice shows, in many such cases, pedestrians themselves are to blame, and if the driver's innocence is proven, they bear no legal responsibility for the person they hit. It is worth reminding here how to behave when hitting a pedestrian.
The most important thing in such a situation is not to leave the scene of the accident, call an ambulance and the traffic police (GAI). If possible, find witnesses in whose presence the scene of the collision should be documented. It is also important to provide first aid to the victim yourself. By doing this, the driver will protect themselves from further trouble.
On February 26, 2016, a Unified Road Safety Day is being held across the country under the slogan “You Cannot Hide from Your Conscience!”, aimed at preventing incidents where participants leave the scene of an accident.
The traffic police (GAI) warns that a driver who leaves the scene of an accident automatically becomes a criminal and, according to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus, will be punished.
In accordance with Article 317 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus, for committing a road traffic accident that resulted in death or grievous bodily harm, the penalty is correctional labour for up to 2 years, or restriction of liberty for up to 5 years.
Knowingly leaving a person in danger, according to Part 3 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus, is punishable by arrest for up to 6 months or imprisonment for up to 3 years.
The search for fleeing drivers is a matter of time; sooner or later, every "fugitive" will face justice, and undoubtedly, the judgment of their own conscience.
