On December 26, Minsk /BelTA correspondent/. No sharp changes in the Belarusian ruble exchange rate are expected in 2013. This was stated by the Chairperson of the Board of the National Bank of Belarus, Nadezhda Ermakova, today during a direct telephone line and an online conference on the BelTA website.
"Despite the fact that the National Bank is not setting target indicators for the exchange rate for 2013, no sharp changes are to be expected. The foundation for the stability of the currency market and the exchange rate is the internal and external balance of the economy, the achievement of which, in turn, is the focus of the work of both the government and the National Bank," noted the head of the National Bank.
At the same time, Nadezhda Ermakova recalled that the exchange rate is formed based on the supply and demand of foreign currency on the domestic market. "Therefore, everyone needs to get used to the fact that a certain variability of the rate in one direction or another is a normal market process," she explained, adding that in 2013, the National Bank will continue to gradually reduce its presence in the currency market.
Nadezhda Ermakova stated that generally positive trends are currently observed in the domestic currency market of Belarus. For 11 months of the current year, economic entities sold more foreign currency than they bought, by $1.5 billion, including almost $210 million in the last two months. According to her, the population is currently a net buyer, although in recent months there has been a decrease in the volume of net purchases. Thus, in November, the population's demand for foreign currency decreased by more than 20% compared to October. The National Bank's firm stance on bank refinancing played a significant role in this, which made it possible to increase the profitability of deposits in the national currency and reduce the attractiveness of savings in foreign currency, explained the head of the National Bank.
Term deposits (in all currencies) have increased by Br21.83 trillion, or by 51.61%, since the beginning of the year, and as of December 15, 2012, they reached Br64.14 trillion. Of these, deposits in Belarusian rubles increased by Br5.42 trillion, or by 57.89%, and as of December 15, 2012, amounted to Br14.78 trillion. Term deposits (in foreign currencies) of the population, in dollar equivalent, have increased by $1.8 billion, or by 45.64%, since the beginning of the year, and as of December 15, 2012, reached $5.75 billion.
"Regarding future forecasts, in 2013, the development of the national credit and deposit market will be determined by the inflation rate, refinancing rates, and, consequently, interest rates on deposits and loans," noted Nadezhda Ermakova.
The Head of the National Bank also reported that in the interbank lending market, where significant fluctuations in rates on loans in the national currency have recently been observed, the regulator will continue to pursue a policy aimed at smoothing out these fluctuations towards the refinancing rate. -0-
