The "ANIV" Foundation for the Development and Support of Armenian Studies proposed to immortalise the memory of the outstanding Soviet military leader, Marshal of the Soviet Union, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, participant in the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War, Ivan Bagramyan, in Horadok. "Representatives of the foundation visited Horadok last week. The project for the memorial sign, which is planned to be installed by the end of the year in the district centre on the street named after Bagramyan, was discussed," the district executive committee reported.
Representatives of the district executive committee explained that the grand opening of the memorial sign will be timed to coincide with the 74th anniversary of the liberation of the district centre from the Nazi invaders. In 1943, Horadok was liberated by the troops of the 1st Baltic Front, commanded by Bagramyan himself. It is noteworthy that for the General of the Army, the Horadok operation was the first in which he acted as commander of the front. In the second half of December 1943, troops under his command conducted an offensive, during which four Wehrmacht divisions were surrounded and destroyed, the Horadok enemy salient was eliminated, and favourable conditions were created for the offensive on Vitebsk.
In memory of the soldiers who gave their lives in the battles for the liberation of Horadok, the "Immortalitу" memorial complex has been erected in the city centre.
