Open parliamentary hearings "Partnership of branches of power as a necessary condition for the successful achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals" will be held today in the Council of the Republic, BELTA reports.

More than 100 people will take part in the parliamentary hearings: members of the Council of the Republic, deputies of the House of Representatives, heads of republican government bodies, members of the Council for Sustainable Development, representatives of the diplomatic corps, public organizations.

The key topics will be the issues of SDG implementation in the economic, environmental and social spheres of Belarus, including through public-private partnership mechanisms. The conditions for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals indicators into state programs of various levels will be discussed. Special attention is planned to be paid to the role of parliament in achieving the SDGs, and to improving the regulatory legal framework for building effective work to achieve them.

Based on the results of the parliamentary hearings, priority areas for further activities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in Belarus will be identified, and relevant recommendations will be prepared for state bodies and interested organizations and associations.

The sustainable development agenda for the period up to 2030 was adopted by UN member states on September 25, 2015. It includes a list of 17 goals aimed at eradicating poverty, combating inequality and injustice, and addressing issues related to climate change.

Belarus has already taken a number of important steps to achieve the SDGs. The National Strategy for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development for the period up to 2030 has been approved by the Government. The Head of State has appointed a national coordinator for achieving the SDGs - Deputy Chairperson of the Council of the Republic Marianna Shchetkina. The National Architecture for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals has been established. It includes the Council for Sustainable Development, the parliamentary group for SDGs, and the sustainable development partnership group.
