One of the key objectives in housing matters set by the regional leadership is not the expansion of cities, but the increase in the availability of affordable and comfortable housing in rural areas. Moving away from urbanisation is an important strategy in addressing the shortage of apartments in the regional centre and cities under regional jurisdiction. This will also help maintain a decent standard of living in the districts and reduce the outflow of rural population to cities. In total, over eight months, 137.2 thousand sq.m of housing, or 1.4 thousand new apartments, were commissioned in the Vitebsk region. Of this, almost a third (37.5 thousand sq.m) was built in rural settlements, accounting for 27.4% of the total housing commissioned in the region.
Until the end of the year, emphasis will also be placed on the construction of individual residential houses. Over eight months, 81.4 thousand sq.m of these were commissioned, which constituted slightly less than 60% of the total housing built in the region.
Furthermore, a significant portion of housing is being built for citizens in need of improved housing conditions. From January to August, 62.6 thousand sq.m of housing for this category of residents was erected, representing 45.6% of the total housing commissioned. Of this amount, citizens used state support for the construction of 50.9 thousand sq.m of housing.
