There are two months left until spring, when the birds wintering with us will be able to find food on their own and in full, which are very difficult or even fatal for the birds wintering with us. During the winter scarcity of food, which is caused by the appearance of snow cover, temperature fluctuations, possible blizzards, alternating thaws, as a result of which trees can become iced over, as well as hollows in the bark filling with meltwater, which makes insects hiding under the bark and their larvae inaccessible, a large number of birds die from starvation. It is at this time that the birds wintering with us – these are mainly great tits, blue tits, coal tits, crested tits, nuthatches, marsh tits, bullfinches, common buntings – need supplementary feeding due to the scarce amount of food in winter and possible exhaustion as a result.
Various types of small feeders made of cardboard, transparent plastic bottles, or shallow wooden boxes can be used to feed wild birds.
The Lepel Inter-district Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora appeals to educational institutions and kindergartens to take part in bird feeding activities.
If you, residents, spend the winter in a country house or at a dacha, make sure that winter feed is always laid out in your garden. If you live in a city apartment, then take care of the birds in the yard, in the nearest park or at a nearby body of water. If you have children, involve them in making feed and feeding birds, as this is a great opportunity for them to study wildlife and the surrounding world, as well as an excellent practical lesson in compassion.
