The Lepel Inter-district Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora informs:
Two months remain until spring, when the birds wintering with us will be able to obtain their own food independently and in full, and these months prove to be very difficult or even fatal for the birds wintering with us. During the winter lack of food, which is caused by the appearance of snow cover, temperature fluctuations, possible blizzards, alternating thaws, as a result of which trees can become iced over, as well as hollows in the bark being filled with meltwater, making insects hiding under the bark and their larvae inaccessible, a large number of birds die from starvation. It is at this time that the birds wintering with us – mainly the great tit, the blue tit, the crested tit, the nuthatch, the chickadee, the bullfinch, the common bunting – need supplementary feeding due to the scarcity of food in winter and possible exhaustion as a result.
For supplementary feeding of wild birds, various types of small feeders can be used, made of cardboard, transparent plastic bottles, or shallow wooden boxes.
The Lepel Inter-district Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora appeals to educational institutions and kindergartens to participate in bird feeding activities.
