Feeding birds

The Lepel Inter-district Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora informs:

There are two months left until spring, when the birds wintering here will be able to forage for themselves independently and in full, which proves to be a very difficult or even fatal period for them. During the winter scarcity of food, caused by snow cover, temperature fluctuations, possible blizzards alternating with thaws, which can lead to ice formation on trees, as well as the filling of bark hollows with meltwater, making insects and their larvae hidden under the bark inaccessible, a large number of birds perish from hunger. It is precisely at this time that the birds wintering here – mainly the great tit, the blue tit, the coal tit, the nuthatch, the marsh tit, the bullfinch, and the common bunting – need supplementary feeding due to the scarcity of food in winter and the potential exhaustion resulting from it.

For supplementary feeding of wild birds, various types of small feeders can be used, made from cardboard, transparent plastic bottles, or shallow wooden boxes.

The Lepel Inter-district Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora appeals to educational institutions and kindergartens to participate in bird feeding initiatives.
