On March 11, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. Polotsk residents will perform 1150 good deeds in honour of their city. An initiative with this name has been launched in Polotsk in connection with preparations for the anniversary celebrations. This was reported to BELTA correspondent by Tatyana Krasko, Head of the Youth Affairs Department of the Polotsk City Executive Committee. The initiative belongs to the members of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union (BRSM) and is supported by the local authorities. Good deeds include creative contests, sports competitions, festivals, and financial support. For example, the youth of ancient Polotsk have decided to gift a children's playground to one of the city courtyards. The results of the initiative will be summarised during the celebration of the city's 1150th anniversary. The authors of the most vibrant and memorable deeds will be recognised, Tatyana Krasko assured. The anniversary events will take place in Polotsk from May 25 to June 5. Preparations are in full swing. The event programme promises to be spectacular, featuring the concert "Masterpieces of Opera Art at the Walls of Ancient Saint Sophia", the medieval culture festival "Rubon", a historical play by the "Pilgrim" folk theatre with the participation of actors from the Yakub Kolas National Drama Theatre, a children's art plein air, and an international scientific and practical conference organised by the National Academy of Sciences and Polotsk State University. Under the auspices of the Orthodox Church, the city will host a bell ringing festival, a concert of spiritual music and chants, a religious procession, and a joint service by church hierarchs dedicated to the commemoration day of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk. During the celebrations, children's, youth, literary, folklore, and other thematic platforms will be operating in the city. As reported, UNESCO has included the 1150th anniversary of Polotsk in the calendar of memorable dates for 2012-2013. A thematic exhibition will be opened at the headquarters of this international organisation in Paris in October 2012. Also, with the financial support of UNESCO, the international scientific and practical conference "History and Archaeology of Polotsk and the Polotsk Land" will be held in Polotsk.
