Fifty red deer will be released today into the forests of Sharkovshchyna District, Sergey Rednenko, Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Organizational Structure of the Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishermen, informed a BELTA correspondent.
The territory for the establishment of a new red deer population is located in hunting grounds leased by the Sharkovshchyna District Organizational Structure of the Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishermen, which are situated within the territory of the Disna and Braslav forest complexes. The newcomers to these areas will be 3 males, 18 females, and 29 yearlings of red deer, acquired from the Kalinkovichi District Organizational Structure of the Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishermen in Gomel Region. The cost of the animals amounted to approximately Br100 thousand, with funding sourced from state duty payments for hunting rights in 2017 in Vitebsk Region.
The animals will only begin to adapt to the new grounds in the summer. For the coming months, they will reside in a temporary enclosure built near the village of Dikevo. Its total area is 15 hectares. The territory includes a water body, feeding platforms, a feed storage facility, and a watchtower.
"Keeping the deer in the enclosure is extremely necessary: it allows for the preservation of the introduced animals, including fostering a so-called 'sense of home,' which will enable them to remain in the settlement area after being released into the wild," emphasized Sergey Rednenko.
