13 December, Vitebsk /BELTA correspondent/. An attempt to smuggle over 32,000 packs of cigarettes into EU countries was thwarted at the border with Latvia, the press service of the Polotsk Border Guard Detachment informed a BELTA correspondent.
On the night of 12-13 December, servicemen of the Polotsk Border Guard Detachment, together with employees of the Department for Combating Organised Crime and Corruption for the Vitebsk Region, during preventive measures near the railway track in the Verkhnedvinsk District, discovered 65 boxes containing over 32,000 packs of Belarusian-made cigarettes. Border guards believe that the tobacco products were prepared for illegal transfer across the state border from Belarus to Latvia using freight railway transport. The cigarettes have currently been seized, and an investigation is underway.-0-
