On February 2nd of the current year, at 02:40, the operational control center of the Lepel District Department for Emergency Situations received a report of a fire in an apartment in the village of Borovka. Upon the arrival of rescuers at the scene, heavy smoke and fire were observed in the apartment.

The apartment is a two-room unit, located on the first floor of a four-story brick residential building. It is not electrified (electricity was disconnected due to non-payment). An autonomous fire alarm was installed in 2015 at the owner's own expense (it did not activate due to the absence of a power source).

The owner, a worker at OJSC "Lepel Repair and Mechanical Plant," lived alone. According to neighbors, he was characterized negatively and regularly consumed alcoholic beverages (neighbors had not seen him the day before the fire). He is registered with the Department of Internal Affairs.

At 02:50, employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations discovered the body of the apartment owner on the floor in a 3x4 m living room (the fire originated in the apartment's kitchen). Rescuers evacuated 9 people from apartments located on the second and third floors via stairwells (there were no casualties). As a result of the fire, property in the apartment's kitchen was damaged, and the walls and ceiling were smoke-stained. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The considered version for the cause of the fire is carelessness while smoking by the deceased.
