Fire alarm saves five people in Yel'sk.

Tuesday morning, September 30th, began quite unusually for a family in Yel'sk, Gomel Region, to say the least. The homeowner was awakened not by an alarm clock, but by the piercing sound of an autonomous fire alarm.

The woman woke her husband and son, as well as a visiting acquaintance and her young child. Everyone safely exited the house onto the street.

Upon the arrival of rescuers, combustion was occurring in the attic space of the house, which had already begun to spread into the rooms. Ministry of Emergency Situations employees promptly extinguished the fire, and fortunately, no one was injured.

"There are many cases where an autonomous fire alarm has warned of a fire," says Tatyana Fedorovich, inspector of the Lepel District Department for Emergency Situations, "as it detects ignition even before the fire becomes uncontrollable, i.e., turns into a blaze. Many such incidents end without the fire brigade being called, because the owners manage to deal with the situation themselves."

An autonomous smoke detector is a simple and effective device that automatically detects smoke and sounds an alarm, warning of impending danger. It is battery-powered, making it independent of the mains electricity supply. Installing detectors in every living room of a house is not only a sensible decision but also a mandatory safety precaution.

Installing a detector does not require special knowledge or skills. The package includes detailed instructions containing all the necessary information on installation, operation, and usage guidelines. The autonomous smoke detector does not spoil the interior; its mounting plate is secured with screws, and the device itself is installed by turning it clockwise until it stops. To remove it, simply turn the device counter-clockwise. The detector operates on a single "Krona" type battery. It is recommended to clean the detector of dust with a vacuum cleaner once a year and to check its functionality every month by pressing the test button.

A flashing red LED light on the detector's casing indicates that it is functioning correctly and is in standby mode.     

If you hear an autonomous smoke detector alarm:  

  • Report the incident by calling 101 or 112.

  • Locate the source of the smoke. If the fire is no larger than a football, attempt to extinguish it yourself. If the fire cannot be extinguished within one minute, evacuate the premises immediately.   

  • Assist the elderly, disabled, and children in leaving the danger zone.   

  • Await the arrival of fire services at a safe distance.
