One of the permanent names on it is Pyotr Dukhovich, a machine operator from SVF "Zaazerye". And not so long ago, I heard information about his daughter Olya, who became the winner of the republican Spartakiad among teenagers.
At the beginning of the year, competitions in winter all-around traditionally take place. In this sport, participants compete in push-ups, long jumps, and cross-country skiing. The winner is determined by the sum of points.
After a successful participation in the district competitions, Olya performed well in the region, taking first place in her age group in the individual standings. The victory was hard-won, with competitors from other districts literally breathing down her neck. Nevertheless, the first place remained with Olya! Based on the results of the competition, she was included in the regional team for the republican championship.
The Vitebsk region was represented at the championship by 14 students from the fifth to eleventh grades from various districts. Boys and girls prepared diligently, trying to dedicate as much time as possible to training; Olya kept pace. Almost every day involved skiing, gym sessions, and not forgetting her studies.
The republican competitions were extremely intense. Both jumps and push-ups counted towards the total score, but the main focus was on the skiing events. The young athletes had to ski one kilometre as quickly as possible.
It might seem that a kilometre is not much, and skiing is very easy. However, it's one thing to ski leisurely while admiring nature, and quite another when you are racing as fast as possible, trying to overtake a dozen other strong opponents.
In the team standings, the Vitebsk region team took fourth place in the winter all-around. Of course, everyone – both athletes and coaches – regretted being just a step away from the podium.
