If you are indoors, you should:

  • Close doors and windows, and avoid draughts.
  • Turn off the television, electrical appliances, and disconnect the antenna.
  • Turn off communication devices: laptops, mobile phones.

During a thunderstorm outdoors:

  • Do not touch anything wet, metallic, or electrical.
  • Remove all metal jewellery (necklaces, rings, earrings) and store them in a leather or plastic bag.
  • Do not open an umbrella over yourself.
  • Never seek shelter under large trees.
  • Do not go out to collect laundry drying on the lines, as it also conducts electricity.
  • Do not talk on your mobile phone; turn it off.

If you are in a forest:

  • Stay away from tall trees. The most sensible option is to sit between low-growing trees with dense crowns.
  • Do not seek shelter near trees previously struck by lightning, as the ground in this area has high electrical conductivity, and a lightning strike in this location is highly probable.
  • It is best to sit in the so-called "foetal position" – with your back bent, head resting on your bent knees and forearms, and feet together.
  • Do not pitch tents in open areas.
  • Do not sit near a burning campfire, as smoke is a good conductor of electricity.

If you are near a body of water:

  • When a thunderstorm approaches, immediately leave the body of water and move as far away from the shoreline as possible.
  • A person on a watercraft, when a thunderstorm approaches, should immediately moor to the shore.
  • Do not enter the water, take shelter in floodplain bushes, or under trees.
