On April 30, the Yakub Kolas National Academic Drama Theatre in Vitebsk will premiere the melodrama "Violins Sometimes Lead to Madness" based on the play by the renowned French writer Françoise Sagan. This is the first staging of the work on the Belarusian stage, BELTA was informed at the theatre.
The plot of the melodrama may seem familiar to some; the relationship between the main characters somewhat resembles the central love line from Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel "The Idiot". "For many years, Charlotte, a woman of not the most respectable behaviour, has been living with her lover Antoine, supported by her wealthy benefactors. Together, the swindlers dream of accumulating enough money and settling in Paris, but their plans are ruined when Charlotte's last patron dies, depriving her of her inheritance. The vast fortune passes to an unknown young nephew, Leopold," the theatre shared. "Charlotte decides to deceive the young man and seize all the property. But close acquaintance with Leopold, who has retained the purity and spontaneity of a child, changes Charlotte, gives rise to true love, and awakens the violins of her soul."
The production is being worked on by Darya Marchenko, a young Belarusian director from Minsk. Last year, she became one of the winners of the republican competition for directorial explications, organised by the Ministry of Culture. This is how she earned the right to stage the play on the Kolas stage. The play was translated into Belarusian by poet and theatre actor Pyotr Laman. Andrey Zhigur, a Kolas theatre artist, is working on the scenography and costumes.
The melodrama "Violins Sometimes Lead to Madness" will be performed by Vitebsk actors. The cast includes actors Ulyana Atyasova, Elena Sherepchenko, Georgy Loyko, Artem Geryak, Evgeny Lukyanov, Anzhelika Barkovskaya, Olga Kuleshova, Pyotr Laman, and Zinaida Gurbo. -0-
