The "Earth Hour" initiative was first launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The following year, other countries joined the campaign. Last year, a record number of participants – over 2 billion people from 7,000 cities in 178 countries worldwide – took part in the event. Belarus also joined in – in 2017, our country will participate in this flash mob for the 9th time.
This year, the campaign is held under the slogan "Change Yourself, Not the Planet". Saving energy and natural resources is, after all, a secondary meaning of the event. Primarily, by participating, people, companies, and organisations express solidarity and responsibility in addressing issues related to climate change and environmental protection. Drawing attention to environmentally conscious behaviour and changing daily habits is the main purpose of the event.
Dear residents of Lepel region! You can also personally participate in the "Earth Hour" campaign. This does not require you to go anywhere or perform any complex rituals. It is enough to simply turn off the lights and unplug unnecessary electrical appliances at home or in the office from 20:30 to 21:30 on March 25, 2017.
