On October 12, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The EU technical assistance project "Neighbouring Road" will be implemented in the Vitebsk region. Deputies of the Vitebsk Regional Council at an extraordinary session decided on the region's participation in its co-financing, reports a BELTA correspondent. As explained to the deputies by Konstantin Cherny, Deputy Chairman of the Economics Committee of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, the project provides for work to improve road infrastructure on the Belarusian-Latvian border section of the Kaplava-Plyusy highway. It is planned to widen the roadway here, and build so-called "pockets" - temporary parking spaces for vehicles. The length of the reconstructed section on the Belarusian side will be 1.5 km. In accordance with the terms of technical assistance, the Vitebsk region will undertake 10% of the financial costs, with the European Union paying the remaining part. The need to equip this section of the border road is due to the fact that, in connection with the entry into force of the agreement on simplified mutual travel for residents of border areas of Belarus and Latvia, which provides for a simplified border crossing procedure for residents of border areas, the flow of citizens travelling through simplified checkpoints has significantly increased. -0-
