The campaign is being held to promptly warn about and prevent road traffic accidents involving pedestrians. During this period, traffic police officers will intensify control over drivers' compliance with the rules for passing pedestrian crossings and pedestrians' compliance with the rules for safely crossing the roadway. Road patrol service units will work on locations with a high concentration of "pedestrian" traffic accidents, and sections of roads and streets in populated areas most at risk of pedestrian collisions.
In addition, all accident-prone road and street sections will be inspected for lighting and the necessary technical means to ensure safe pedestrian movement.
Extensive explanatory work and preventive measures are planned. In work collectives and among children, traffic police officers will once again explain the causes and consequences of traffic accidents occurring at pedestrian crossings, and remind them of the rules for safe behaviour when crossing the roadway and passing pedestrian crossings.
In January-May 2017, despite a decrease in the number of traffic accidents and people injured in them, an increase in the number of fatalities in traffic accidents across the republic was noted. The main cause of traffic accidents caused by vehicle drivers is the violation of the rules for passing pedestrian crossings. Almost half of the minors who became participants in traffic accidents as pedestrians were injured at designated pedestrian crossings.
