The commercial size is the minimum size of a fish at which its catch is permitted. It is established to prevent the capture of young individuals that have not had time to grow and reproduce. The length of a fish is determined by measuring the distance from the tip of the snout (with the mouth closed) to the base of the middle rays of the caudal fin (i.e., excluding the caudal fin).

According to the Rules of Fishery Management and Fishing, the commercial size is established for 15 species of fish. For example, the size of a caught zander or pike must not be less than 40 centimetres. The capture of fish that have not reached the commercial size is considered a violation of the rules.

In accordance with Article 15.35 of the Code of Administrative Offences, the capture of fish or other aquatic animals without proper permission, or during prohibited times or seasons, or in prohibited areas, or with prohibited gear, or by prohibited methods, as well as an attempt at such capture, shall incur a fine of from twenty to fifty basic units with confiscation of fishing gear.
