The implementation of the law "On Amnesty for Certain Categories of Persons Who Have Committed Crimes" has been completed in Belarus, the Ministry of Internal Affairs informed a BELTA correspondent. A total of 18,737 convicts serving sentences in penal institutions fell under the scope of the law. During the implementation of the amnesty, 3,059 people were released from further serving sentences in closed-type correctional institutions, and 1,167 people from open-type correctional institutions. The sentence term was reduced by one year for 6,064 convicts serving sentences in closed-type correctional institutions, and for 893 serving sentences in open-type correctional institutions. Amnesty was denied to 6,198 convicts in closed-type correctional institutions and 1,356 convicts in open-type correctional institutions. The President of Belarus signed the law "On Amnesty for Certain Categories of Persons Who Have Committed Crimes" on July 9, 2012. As before, persons convicted of committing crimes posing a great public danger could not count on amnesty. This includes crimes against peace and humanity, against the state, against life and health, and against sexual integrity. The amnesty also did not apply to those who had been granted amnesty or pardon between 2005 and 2012; those who had not compensated for the economic damage caused by their actions (except for the privileged category) by the date the sentence entered into force; or whose death penalty had been commuted to life imprisonment. The amnesty will not apply to those who maliciously violate order in correctional institutions, as well as those who have committed particularly dangerous recidivism of crimes.-0-
