On February 15, we observe the Day of Remembrance for Internationalist Soldiers, honouring and expressing gratitude to servicemen who defended the interests of their Motherland in international military conflicts.
Reflecting on the historical experience of past decades and analysing the current global situation, we re-evaluate the significance of the mission undertaken by internationalist soldiers. On this day, we express our appreciation to those who, in the "hot spots" of the planet, ensured the resolution of national security tasks, conscientiously fulfilled their military and internationalist duty, and remained loyal to their oath until the end.
The Afghan War claimed the lives of 160 sons of the Pridvinian region, and over 1200 participants of those tragic events have passed away in peacetime. Two natives of the region, Vasily Pimenov and Vasily Shcherbakov, were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and over one and a half thousand were decorated with orders and medals. Streets are named after them, memorial plaques have been installed on the schools they attended, and their memory lives on in museum exhibits and books.
Having carried the honour and dignity forged in the flames of war into peaceful life, internationalist soldiers continue to work with distinction for the benefit of their native land. Today, veterans of combat operations, representatives of the Belarusian Union of Veterans of the War in Afghanistan, serve as a model in the military-patriotic education of youth and an example for all who serve, strengthening our country's defence capability and enhancing the might of its Armed Forces. We thank you for your courage and steadfast life stance.
