In the Vitebsk region, 99 accidents involving pedestrians have occurred since the beginning of 2020, resulting in 20 fatalities and 81 injuries of varying severity.

40 road traffic accidents were caused by pedestrians themselves, resulting in 13 fatalities. 20 road traffic accidents involving this category of road users were committed by intoxicated individuals.

Research by specialists in this area indicates that in 90% of cases, pedestrians consciously violate traffic rules, with the primary motive being haste. The sudden appearance of a person in the path of a vehicle complicates the driver's ability to avoid a collision. Accident statistics show that in most such cases, drivers did not notice the person running across the road at all.

A significant portion of accidents occur during darkness, as pedestrians can see a vehicle with its headlights on, but drivers cannot see pedestrians. Many pedestrians are unaware of this, thereby endangering themselves. When approaching a pedestrian crossing, drivers must carefully observe the behaviour of pedestrians or drivers of other vehicles. If a nearby vehicle brakes, it is possible that it is stopping to allow a pedestrian to pass, so in this situation, it is advisable to slow down and, having confirmed the absence of pedestrians, continue driving.

In the event that you witness a failure to yield to pedestrians at unregulated pedestrian crossings, the State Automobile Inspectorate requests that you provide video files from dashcams that recorded the incident (tel. 3-20-83, tel. 102).
