From January 26 to 28, 2023, the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Lepel District Department of Internal Affairs will be carrying out enhanced control over railway crossings within the district. During these days, the traffic police will be informing drivers of vehicles and pedestrians about the inadmissibility of violations.

Drivers may cross railway tracks only at railway crossings, ensuring that no railway rolling stock is approaching. The barrier must be open and the traffic light must not show a prohibitory signal. In some cases, drivers must follow the instructions of the railway crossing attendant.

It is prohibited to enter a railway crossing:

— when the barrier is closed or is beginning to close, regardless of the traffic light signal;

— when the traffic light shows a prohibitory signal, regardless of the presence and position of the barrier;

— when the railway crossing attendant shows a prohibitory signal (the attendant is facing the driver with their chest or back, holding a red light emitting lantern or a red flag above their head, or with arms extended to the sides);

— if a traffic jam has formed beyond the railway crossing, which will force the driver to stop on the railway crossing;

— if railway rolling stock is approaching the railway crossing within sight.

It is also prohibited to overtake vehicles stopped before a railway crossing by moving into the oncoming lane, or to open the barrier without authorisation.

The rules prohibit the transportation of agricultural, road, construction, and other machinery and mechanisms across a railway crossing in a position where, during transportation, they may obstruct traffic, damage the road surface, the railway track, the railway crossing equipment, or traffic control devices.

Where movement across a railway crossing is prohibited, the driver must stop at the "No Stopping" road sign or the "Stop Line" (horizontal road marking line 1.12). If these are absent, the driver must stop before the traffic light. If there is no traffic light, the driver must stop no closer than 5 meters from the barrier. If there is no barrier, the driver must stop at the "Single Track Railway" or "Multiple Track Railway" road sign. If there are no traffic control devices, the driver must stop no closer than 10 meters from the nearest rail.

In the event of a forced stop of a vehicle on a railway crossing, the driver is obliged to switch on the hazard warning lights, immediately disembark passengers, and take measures to clear the railway crossing.

Law enforcement officers remind that there is administrative liability for violating the rules for crossing railway crossings. The Code provides for a fine of two to four basic units (one basic unit is currently 37 rubles).
