Since the beginning of the month, 4 road traffic accidents involving pedestrians have occurred in the Vitebsk region, resulting in 4 injuries, one of whom is a minor.

In this regard, on October 12 of the current year, the State Automobile Inspectorate is conducting a set of preventive measures titled "Stop, Pedestrian – Don't Rush Under the Wheels!"

According to the Traffic Regulations, pedestrians are granted the right of way when crossing the roadway at a pedestrian crossing. However, it is advisable to use this right judiciously, ensuring complete safety. If a pedestrian crossing is not available, the roadway should be crossed at intersections (along the line of pavements and verges). Where marked pedestrian crossings are not visible, the road should be crossed at a right angle. It is prohibited to cross at road curves with a small radius, to cross in areas with limited visibility, or to step onto the roadway from behind vehicles or other obstructions. Before stepping onto the roadway, pedestrians should ensure there is no approaching traffic and correctly assess the distance to and speed of oncoming vehicles.

Collisions at intersections are frequent when traffic light signals are changing, with the initial and final intervals of pedestrian movement on a green light being particularly dangerous. Risk is present when a pedestrian is on the roadway at the moment a red traffic light signal is activated. A vehicle approaching the intersection may enter it without stopping.

According to the Traffic Regulations, it is prohibited to linger on the roadway, including on the line of horizontal road markings that separate oncoming and same-direction traffic flows, except for safety islands.
