On January 16, Minsk / Tatyana Lobas - BELTA /. Snow fell across Belarus last weekend with varying intensity. The snow depth across the republic ranged from 1 cm to 13 cm on average, Lyudmila Parashchuk, chief forecaster at the Republican Hydrometeorological Centre, told a BELTA correspondent.
At the Minsk and Ezezhishche (Vitebsk region, Horadok district) weather stations, the snow depth reached 18 cm. This is the highest snow cover in the republic, a kind of record since the beginning of the current winter, the specialist emphasized.
According to Lyudmila Parashchuk, the heavy snowfall was caused by the displacement of a cyclone from the Leningrad region to Ukraine through Belarus. Thus, a real winter began in Belarus on Old New Year's Day. The air temperature dropped.
In the future, snow will fall only in places, but frosts will intensify. In the next 24 hours, on January 16, the cyclone will move from the territory of Belarus to southern Ukraine, dragging cold air from the north behind it. Cloudy weather with clear spells is expected. By Wednesday, the night temperature will drop to minus 17 degrees. -0-
