The implementation of an outdoor lighting control system has enabled Vitebsk to reduce its annual electricity consumption by 10-15%, from 11 to 9 million kWh. This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by Alexander Kravchenko, Head of the Vitebsk Regional Department for Supervision of Rational Use of Fuel and Energy Resources of the Department for Energy Efficiency of the State Committee for Standardization.
"We seriously addressed the issue of saving electricity while maintaining street lighting standards in cities 3-4 years ago. From a purely technical standpoint, the task was solved very simply - there are automatic control systems that reduce the supply voltage to lighting devices, which practically does not lead to a noticeable change in horizontal illumination," said Alexander Kravchenko, emphasizing that the main difficulty was the need to overcome people's psychology.
According to the head of the department, dry figures and calculations helped to overcome this problem. Illumination measurements were taken. "It turned out that in some places, the standards were exceeded by 2-2.5 times. A report was prepared, a feasibility study for the implementation of an energy-saving system was written, and it was distributed to the city leadership. The project was financed as follows: Br700 million - funds allocated under the regional energy-saving program, Br200-300 million - from the city budget," the head of the department explained.
He stressed that there are still reserves in this area in the regional center. "The outdoor lighting control system must be incorporated into the design of new microdistricts from the outset," Alexander Kravchenko is convinced. -0-
