The aim of this campaign is to increase the safety level of elderly people, ensuring the personal and property security of this category of citizens. The Lepel district has seen cases of theft and fraud against elderly citizens. These crimes are committed by fraudsters, including persons of Roma nationality, who, under the guise of providing social assistance and services for purchasing goods, medications, as well as selling items and non-ferrous metals, travel by car through villages, enter homes, distract the owners, and commit thefts.
For the first 3 months of 2017, 7 (2016-8) crimes were committed against citizens of retirement age in the Lepel district, across all service areas. Of this number, 4 (2016-6) were thefts, 0 (2016-2) were robberies, 1 (2016-0) was torture, and 2 (2016-0) were traffic violations.
Thefts are a real scourge. And finding solutions to the problem is a headache not only for the public, heads of legal entities and individuals, but also for law enforcement agencies. Nevertheless, it is impossible to stop encroachments on apartment property through the efforts of the police alone. Much in this matter also depends on the property owners themselves, of various forms of ownership.
Half of residential burglaries are committed through free access, where criminals do not expend effort to overcome barriers, because victims leave doors and windows open. Remember that when leaving your home unattended, especially for a long time, the property inside may attract burglars. Do not be overly trusting. Thieves may enter your home disguised as a postman, plumber, acquaintance of your neighbors or relatives. Some criminals ask for a drink, medicine, claim they want to return money or pass a note to neighbors and ask you to bring paper or a pen to leave them a note. In many cases, offenders offer, including when visiting citizens at their place of residence, to purchase certain items or medicines at below-market prices, which in reality are worth much less. The pretexts can be the most varied.
Elderly citizens, who due to low pensions try to purchase goods at low prices, become particularly vulnerable to thieves, and all the criminal needs is to enter the apartment or house to carry out their intentions.
