The Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora reports that a ban on fishing for wels catfish is being introduced in the fishing grounds within the Vitebsk region from 31 May to 01 July 2020.

The Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora reports that a ban on fishing for wels catfish is being introduced in the fishing grounds within the Vitebsk region from 31 May to 01 July 2020.

Fishing for this species of fish using any fishing gear is prohibited, and being within 1 km of the shoreline of fishing grounds with this species of fish is also prohibited. Administrative liability for catching wels catfish entails a fine ranging from 20 to 50 basic units, and for being with this species of fish, from 5 to 30 basic units.

Anglers who violate the Rules for Conducting Fishing and Fishery Management will be held liable in accordance with current legislation. For each harvested specimen of wels catfish, the offender is obliged to compensate for the environmental damage caused, calculated at triple the rate, namely 12 basic units (306 rubles). And in the event that the damage from illegal fishing amounts to 100 or more basic units, criminal liability may arise.
