A new series of lectures and TV programmes "Vitebsk: Real and Popular History" is launching, organisers informed a BELTA correspondent.
The first public lecture of the third season, "Temples of Old Vitebsk: In Search of the Lost," will take place in the conference hall of the V. Lenin Vitebsk Regional Library on September 27 at 18:00. It will be delivered by Viktor Borisenkov, a well-known Vitebsk local historian and author of numerous photo projects on the city's history. Lectures will be held at the library on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Video versions of the previous 30 excursions into the past of the city on the Daugava River by experts are available on the regional library's website, as well as in the course group on the social network.
Additionally, viewers of the "Vitebsk" TV channel will be able to watch the first television episode on the topic "Pre-Christian Vitebsk" on September 20 at 19:00. "In the future, we plan to broadcast every first and third Thursday of the month," the organisers added.
The lecture series "Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of Our Native City" was launched in September 2016 to serve as an alternative platform to Internet resources that disseminate pseudo-historical facts, theories, and free interpretations of the history of Vitebsk and Belarus. Since February 2018, the courses in the format of a programme have been broadcast on the regional TV channel. Experts who appeared on the programme "Evening Vitebsk" discussed curious facts and little-known aspects of the life of the city and its inhabitants. The organisers abandoned a chronological presentation of material in favour of thematic episodes. Many topics have been discussed on air, including "Baltic Vitebsk," "On the Founding of Vitebsk by Olga," "The Vitebsk Chronicle," "The Principality of Polotsk in the 11th Century," "The City on the Route 'From the Varangians to the Greeks'," and "Wartime Vitebsk in Photographs."
The courses are organised by the Department of History of Belarus of the P. Masherov Vitebsk State University, the V. Lenin Regional Library, the Regional Museum of Local Lore, the State Archive of the Vitebsk Region, and the folk historical reconstruction club Vargentorn.
