The second season of public lectures from the cycle "Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of the Native City" is launching, as reported to a BELTA correspondent by one of the project initiators, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of History of Belarus at PSU named after P. Masherov, Denis Yurchak.
The first lecture of the new season will take place on September 28 at 18:00 at the regional library and will be dedicated to Marc Chagall. The lecturer will be the well-known local historian, head of the board of trustees of the Marc Chagall Museum in Vitebsk, and researcher of the artist's life and work, Lyudmila Khmelnitskaya. "We still have a lot of interesting things left. You can find out about the plans for new meetings and information on their outcomes in our VKontakte group. For now, we have only decided that we will present the events and discoveries of the 20th century in chronological order," said Denis Yurchak.
The lecture series "Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of the Native City" was launched in September last year to become an alternative platform to internet resources that disseminate too many pseudo-historical facts, theories, and free interpretations of the history of Vitebsk and Belarus. An initiative group of professionals in this field offers an exclusively scientific perspective on the city's history, relying on reliable sources and their critical analysis, including the discussion of very bold hypotheses. The past season included 16 lectures, with the participation of historians from PSU named after M. Masherov, staff members of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, various museums, and enthusiast local historians and reenactors. Regardless of the topic, each meeting attracted several dozen listeners, sometimes up to 70.
The organizers of the free courses are the Department of History of Belarus of Vitebsk State University named after P. Masherov, the Lenin Regional Library, in conjunction with the historical reenactment club VARGENTORN and the Vitebsk Regional. Lectures will traditionally be held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.
